It shattered in the sky,
Clattered among the stars and heaps of nothingness.
It was in pieces. Neat
Bite-sized crumbs which we reached into the clouds
To let weigh down our pant pockets.
The specks that remained haunted and howled,
So we burned our fingerprints
Pickpocketing the stars.
We were shadowless people
Looking up at the night, the light gone,
With nothing remaining to guide us.
And when we felt for the fragments we’d stolen from the sky
We could no longer find them,
Because we couldn’t see in the dark.
